Attempting to gauge public opinion, political leaders and media outlets often read “Letters to the Editor” of local and national publications. You can help keep pro-family issues and a Christian perspective in the forefront of policy and cultural debates that influence our society. Write letters of rebuttal when you disagree with something published, letters of support when the editor publishes content that you appreciate, and letters of concern when you want to address a pressing public issue.

Current key issues, critical to the well-being of the family, are listed below with talking points. Make a difference by voicing your viewpoint in your local newspaper and write a letter to the editor today!

Writing a Letter to the Editor:

  • Familiarize yourself with the length and type of letters your paper publishes.
  • Keep your letter within 150-200 words (varies).
  • Make your letter original, vividly developing one or two key points that add to the debate.
  • Keep it short and on topic – reducing the risk of editing.
  • End with a short, pithy punch line.
  • Be bold but not harsh or inflammatory.
  • Find and contact local and national media through AFA's Guide to the Media.
    • Print off and sign your letter, and mail it to your local newspaper including your name, full address, and phone number.
    • E-mail your letter through AFA's Guide to the Media including your full address and phone number in the “message” box.
